the water pump is part of the timing belt or chain. you have to take the belt or chain off to change the water pump. if you change the water pump, change the belt too.

Near the top of the belt there is a belt tensioner; it has a pulley attached to it. It is spring loaded and there is a provision to attach a breaker bar to force back the spring; once you do, it is easy to remove the serpentine belt.

Put a socket and ratchet on the tensioner belt pulley. Pull to the side, releasing the belt tension. Remove the belt and put the new one on, a helper will make this easier. Take the ratchet off to re-tension the belt.
