The spark plugs on the 2nd generation Tacoma 4.0 v6 are accessed from the top. There is a single bolt that secures each of 3 coil packs on each side of the engine. Remove the bolt with a 10mm socket, and then disconnect the plug to the coil pack.
The coil pack can then be removed, giving access to the spark plugs. I used a ratchet with an 18" extension attached to a 5/8" spark plug socket.
Install new spark plug and tighten according to the plug manufacturers instruction. Reassemble in the opposite order.
The air intake filter assembly must be removed to give easy access to the passenger side coilpacks/plugs.
