How do you change shock absorbers on a 1996 Toyota Tacoma?

It should have struts not shocks. For struts you need to take the entire strut assembly out, use a spring compressor to take the tension off of the strut, remove the nut on top of the strut, take the top plate off and the spring and put them on the new strut. Tighten the nut and reinstall in the car. There is a lot of tension in the spring when it is compressed and a mistake can cost you a finger, hand or your life. Unless you have some mechanical experience, better off taking it some where.

It does have shocks on the rear. One bolt at the top and one bolt at the bottom. Very simple to replace. The front has struts. I just changed a set on a 1999 Tacoma and what I bought was the entire assembly including the strut, spring, and mount, all in one self contained package. All you do it unbolt the old assembly and install the new one. No spring compressing, no danger of the spring popping out or the tool breaking and the spring flying out and taking your head off. I bought the Strutmasters assembly and it cost just slightly more than a strut only. You not only get a new strut but a new spring also. Click the link to see it.

How do you fix blue smoke coming from a lawn mower?

It could be valve guides, rings you will hve to replace them. More: If the engine is a 2-stroke where the oil is mixed with the fuel, you might be using the wrong oil/fuel mixture (too much oil). Check the owner's manual for the correct mixture.

What would cause sputtering and hesitation for a cold engine?

Well, a variety of things would cause sputtering and hesitation. When the engine is cold, the thickness of oil is greatly increased, and may not make it all the way up to the top of the valves and that would make the engine rumble and die. Colder temperatures also would make a throttle stick, causing hesitation. Your choke may be sticky. Maybe your temperature sensor is off, and is registering the 'cold' temp colder than it actually is. At any rate, plan an extra minute or two and LET YOUR CAR WARM UP before you drive it. And remember, everyone else on the road has had their cars sputter, hesitate, and die in traffic. It happens when its cold out.

If it is a new enough Toyota the fuel injectors take a while to warm up and often does that in my truck don't worry about it but let it warm up like five minutes or so before going over twenty-five or so.

My experience with a '98 Tacoma 4 cylinder: the mass air sensor was dirty. Twice.

It is just downstream of the air cleaner. First time a small tear in the air filter allowed dirt in. Second time a tiny bit of hair, probably off my shirt, when I changed the filter.

What is the value of keys from the USS Tacoma?

I had a great uncle serve on the Tacoma. Out of curiosity what name is on the keys? My grandfather had a tattoo that said USS Tacoma. He was born in 1898. Name George Parks. This was probably the cruiser USS Tacoma (CL-20), guessing that he served in his early twenties

The Tacoma was a gunboat and existed in several forms. I decommissioned the USS Tacoma PG-92 in 1981. (Aggie80)

The keys are a nice memento, probably not of great value, more historical than anything else.

Why would the engine crank over but not start?

I would say the car is not getting any fuel. you could try replacing the fuel filter which is cheap. It could also be the fuel pump which is probably in the tank.(try tapping the gas tank with a hammer lightly) If the car starts then it is probably the pump. The last thing i think it could be is that is isn't getting any spark. Take the spark plug wire off the plug itself and put a screwdriver in the hole and make sure it is touching the metal part of the plug. Have someone try to start the car and hold the screwdriver near a piece of metal, if you see a blue spark then the car is getting spark, if you see nothing then you probably have a bad coil.
Check all the plugs most of time one of the points is not making contact and no spark will hit on newer vehicles if all cylinders are not getting spark your engine will turn until the battery is dead..if points are not clean 1 cylinder will not fire and it will not start check points and plugs and it will fire right up

Turn Signals and Hazard Lights

Where is the flasher?

You would normally find it under the dash near the steering column. It is not in the fuse panel. It's left of the ashtray. Turn on the hazards and listen, the turn signal and 4 way flashers are side by side. You don't say what kind of vehicle you have, but if you are looking for a stand-alone flasher unit on late model Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln vehicles, you won't find it. It is incorporated within the hazard flasher swith, located on top of the steering column. This is a multi-function switch that controls turn signals, brake lights, and emergency flashers. If these lights are not working, a quick fix is to spray WD 40 around the switch. Then push it down with your thumb and let it pop up several times and also wiggle it around a bit.

How do you reset check engine light on Toyota's?

The check engine light is on because there is a problem with the system. Until the problem is corrected the light will remain on even if you reset it. Most code readers can reset the light but you will need to fix the problem first. Have your local auto parts store read the code(s) set to help you determine what is wrong.

Fuel Economy and Mileage

Do manual transmission cars or trucks really get better gas mileage and cost less to maintain than automatics?

Two things - repairs cost less on manuals because all you're really dealing with is a clutch instead of a whole transmission and manuals typically get better gas mileage than an automatic because you are in full control of the gear you're in.

Most definitely! They are better all the way around. Esp. when it comes to repairs. Learning to drive a stick just takes practice.

This all depends on the driver. Yes, a manual transmission does cost less to replace. A manual transmission has the availibility of better gas mileage depending on the drivers decision to run a higher gear whenever possible. Higher gear = better gass mileage, less acceleration....less fun .

Toyota tacoma 2000 blows tail light fuse when you plug the trailer?

Fuses are designed and intended to protect the wiring from SHORT CIRCUITS and OVERLOADING. When a fuse "blows" instantly upon connecting the trailer wiring to the vehicle wiring connector, suggests a short in the trailer wiring, or one of the light sockets/fixtures. If the fuse did not blow instantly, but over a period of minutes, would be suggestive ofan overload condition. Sinceit blows the tail light fuse, logic suggests the short should be found in the tail light wires or bulb sockets on the trailer. Another possibility, but very remote, is a defect in one or both of the connector plugs. Look for an area ofcut or chaffed insulation onthe trailer tail light wires, where the wire may be "pinched" in a crevicebetween twometal members of the trailer frame, OR where the wire makes a very sharp turn around a metal edge.j3h. you have a short in the tail light wiring of the trailer

How often should synthetic oil be changed?

Always follow the recommended oil change intervals in your owners manual (synthetic or not.) ANSWER The automotive manufacturer does not refine oil, they do not even make their own parts, they assemble vehicles and by law submit API lubrication recommendations for assembled vehicles. Your best bet in motor oil or any consumer product that you purchase is to go by the manufactures product recommendation. If you would like to check out just how far you can go on an oil drain interval.

How do you get the keys out of a 97 Grand Am GT ignition when it does not turn of all the way off?

I'll I have to do on my 96 grand am is put the steering wheel all the way down (tilt steering) before putting it into park.

its all oabut hearing the click after the keys r all the way back slowly turn forward and try to pull them out ull here a click and they well slide right out

this used to happen to me, too... key would get stuck in the accessory position and my battery got drained twice. on the bottom of the steering column there is a little plastic square cover; pop it off and you will feel a round button; press this button and the key will come out even if it's not in the off position.

My 1996 Grand AM had the same problem. The keys would get stuck in the ignition. It turned out to be a worn out shifter. The shifter was not getting all the way into park.

I had the same problem on my 97. Like the poster above it was the shifter. There is a electric solenoid on the shifter. It's plunger is spring loaded so that when you go into park the solenoid deenergizes and allows the ignition switch to go all the way to the off posititon and release the key. The spring on the plunger gets weak or clogged with gunk and the plunger cannot drop to deenergize the circuit. The solenoid is riveted to the shifter so it cannot be changed. You will end up having to replace the shifter assembly.

Hey Mike==It is inline. Get under it and follow the fuel line from the tank to the engine and you will find it. GoodluckJOe

On my 88 Toyota truck, you reach over the front passenger wheel to access the fuel filter. It is tough to get at, but two bolts hold it on and it is locate up and back from the oil filter. .

Like he said, crawl underneath and follow the lines from the tank, it's located on the frame rail.....

This is correct, the fuel filter is bolted to the engine block my truck is EFI, the filter is hard to get to I had to go in between the fender well and upper A-frame to get to it. The bolts that hold to inlet and outlet lines are metric 17 and the two bolts that secure the filter to the block are metric 12.{ I GOT IT OFF , BUT ITS GOING TO BE HELL GETTING A NEW ONE BACK ON }

Hi,

On my 1988 (22R engine, short wheelbase, 2 wheel drive model) it is located in front and above the fuel tank on the right hand side of the truck, the way I change mine (it is a messy job) is to lay under the truck on the passenger side and reach up past the filler hose and there is the filter.

On the righthand side of the block, just under the intake manifold and behind the starter. It's easy to get to if you remove the right front wheel and go in from the fenderwell.
