you go to settings, then sound profile, then click on the little arrow thing next to normal, in the top right corner it should say calls, click on it and change it to message, then click on message alert tone.
you can only use the built in 4 tones

It depends on your phone's model. I have the Samsung Zeal. To do it, go to the following: Media Center>Music and Tones> My Ringtones> select the tone> Save As> Alert Tones> TXT Message.

sms tones are for text messages.
To change the normal keypad into a QWERTY keypad on samsung coby 2 s3850 go to the keypad area under the settings. Go to formatting options and change it to what you would like.
