How do you change timing belt for 1994 Lexus gs300?

Basically you need to strip the accessories from the front of the engine which is fairly easy. You will need to remove the lower pulley which is bolted into the crankshaft. This is necessary to remove the shield over the timing belt. Removal of this bolt is a job for 2 grown men. The difficult part is holding the pulley while loosening the bolt. There is a tool for holding the pulley. As far a I know Snap-on and others do not make this tool. I believe Toyota holds the patten for this tool and it costs over $300. I know it sounds crazy but true. I am not an engineer but it seems there is no reason to use a bolt this large. The socket is 21 or 22 mm. Check the torque for this bolt as memory says it is 210 or 220 foot lbs. which requires a large torque wrench. BTW the timing belt has to be removed to replace the water pump. It is recommended to replace the water pump once you get in that far. I found a guy locally who made a tool to hold the pulley. Not an exact fit but it worked. I don't know what the book time on this is but I will guess it would take a seasoned mechanic a minimum of 6.5 hours with a shop and the proper tools. Remember to torque all bolts to spec including the water pump as you are working with aluminum parts. Hope this helps!
