I'm no mechanic, but I did this job a few months ago, and it worked out well.
I did this on a 6 cylinder. I hope yours is the same. I also hope that you got a rubber molded gasket, not because I know anything about them, but that's what Discount Auto gave me when I asked for a gasket.
If you haven't gotten the supplies yet, you should look for a valve cover gasket at your local auto parts store or order it online, on websites like partstrain.com.
You should make sure you get a pack that has the rubber washers included(or buy them seperately). I also suggest buying new hardware. This I found easiest online.
So altogether, you need:
Gasket
Washers
Hardware(optional)
Screwdriver
Lots of Gojo hand soap [haha]
1)I started with disconnected the wiring and tubing from the cover. (It shouldn't be hard to put back together when you've replaced the gasket, but I would take a picture if you have a digital camera handy just in case.)
2) I then unscrewed the 7 screws holding the valve cover on. (If you didn't buy new hardware, keep track of the screws.) If you successfully detached everything from the valve cover, it should lift right off the engine, and you can set it somewhere safe.
3. The gasket(probably the original paper gasket) might take a little scraping to clean up. You will want to make sure to remove all the gunk from the rim of contact.
4. Take the new gasket and set it where the valve cover aligns. You will have to flip, or rotate the gasket to have it align with the cover.
5. Pick your valve cover up, and gently set it on the new gasket.
6. Here's where you need to be careful not to let the gasket slip off the edge... Using your new washers(and hardware if you have it) Slip the hardware through the washers and into the valve cover. Be extra careful to get the screw through the washer, valve cover, gasket then into the mount. Do that for all 7 screws. Tighten them with a hand screwdriver, but be careful not to over tighten as that will cause the gasket to slip out, and ruin the entire repair job.
7. Reconnect all the wiring and tubing that you took off when you began, and let it roar.
