Difficult to answer since you didn't include the type of transmission or year and model of car. Since you are asking I assume you have a manual transmission. To check the fluid in it you have to jack it up but evenly ( all four tires off the ground and the car level ) and climb underneath. There are two 17mm Allen plugs one on the bottom ( the drain plug ) and one on the passenger side above it ( the fill plug ). Take out the fill plug and put your finger in the hole. The fluid level should be right at the bottom of the hole so that if you put anymore in it would flow out. Since you are going through all this trouble and the fluid should be checked every 30K miles and changed every 60K miles you might want flush out and refill your transmission with new oil.
