When adding transmission fluid to a Subaru Legacy or almost any other vehicle with an automatic transmission, your, first of all, going to need a long necked funnel. When you check the fluid level you pull out a dip stick that normally sits in a tube of some sort. Once you check the level, leave the dip stick out and place the small end of the funnel into the hole the stick came out of. Then slowly pour the transmission fluid into the funnel. Be sure you do not over fill the fluid level as it can cause damage to the transmission. Once the desired level is reach, return the dip stick to the tube. Always check the fluid level with the vehicle at normal operating temperature and idling in park.
