The best way to check for an exhaust leak is to hold a rag over the end of the exahust, with the car running on idle, and check for any smoke coming out from the rest of the exhaust system. If so it is likely that a hole has been created by rust eating away at the sysem; you will probably need to replace parts of the system in such a case.
