Per the manual: The bike has to have been thoroughly warmed up, allowed to cool down, and then warmed up again. Then you stop the motor, give it a minute or so to drain, and remove the seat. On my 2002, you have to use the ignition / fork lock key to release the seat lock via cable.
Then you have to balance the bike at vertical, remove the dipstick (on the right behind the fuel tank), clean it off, and insert to the right-hand side of the tube until the threads make contact, but do not screw it in. Read the level on the dipstick. The level is supposed to be even with the top of the cross-hatched area. If not, add oil through the tube until it is correct.
The oil capacity of a Yamaha Road Star is 5 quarts. It is recommended to change the oil every 5,000 miles for optimal performance.

The motor oil capacity of the 2002 Yamaha Road Star is 5.3 quarts. However, it is recommended to use 4.3 quarts with a filter change or 3.9 quarts without a filter change.
The 1700 Roadstar puts out about 65 horsepower and about 99 ft. lbs. of torque.
