5w40 is strongly recommended. If it is diesel check to make sure the oil meets the proper VW specs
Your going to have to double check with your owners manual or dealer. It will be a 5w40 synthetic, but I don't know if it needs to meet a certain VW Oil Spec.

You can definitely seize the engine if you don't check the oil every day and add more when needed.
Double check your owners manual, I can't remember what spec is required for 2003 VW's. But it will definitely be a 5w40 oil
VW from 1995 and on (automatic transmission) HAVE NO OIL DIPSTICK. You have to take it to your VW dealer for a check every 100 K miles. I hope this help. Good luck and GOD Bless.
