First verify that you can turn the engine over by hand.
Next, verify that you have a good power supply (battery in good condition and fully charged).
Verify that you have a good connection from battery positive to the large wire at the starter.
Verify that you have a good connection from battery negative to the body of the starter.
Temporarily connect battery positive to the small wire at the starter. Listen for the starter to turn the engine over at a normal speed for cranking the engine. If so, your starter is working.
Many auto parts stores offer free starter testing - not sure if they can be tested while still on the vehicle.
