Check coolant first, if ok, squeeze top hose while car warms. When thermo opens, you will feel it circulate through, if not check thermo.
If the tranny is slipping, check the fluid level, then maybe change the filter. If the engine is missing, then tue it up, which means, plugs, cap, rotor, and maybe plug wires. The fuel filter would be something to look at, as well.

There is none on the 2.4L DOHC. On the transmission close to the oil drain plug,there is a plug that you remove.If transmission fluid runs out of the hole it is full.

I have a 2000 Malibu and it does not have a tranny dipstick. You have to check fluid under car, there is a check hole on the trans. It's a pain in the butt.
If you question the condition of the fuel filter, just replace it with a new one.
theres no real way to, there the fill hole on top of the tranny under the break fluid tank but theres no dipstick...its a Chevy
