having trouble removing the transmission oil pan from a 1998 explorer sport 4x4. need photos.
Answer There is a dip stick at the back of the engine. Start your engine first, let it run and check your transmission oil level. You only check transmission oil levels when the engine is running, other oil levels have to be checked when the engine is warm to hot but not running.
It means check your transmission, why not start with the oil.
According to the owners manual, a 1997 Ford Explorer 5 speed manual transmission takes Ford Motorcraft Mercon ATF (automatic transmission fluid)
A Ford Explorer will last as long as the owner takes care of it. You will see some transmission issues with the 1997, but most will last 250k to 300k and over. Change your oil and check your fluids on a regular bases.
