The onboard computer clears the codes whenever it detects that the fault has been repaired. For example, if the computer detects a faulty oxygen sensor, the MIL (malfunction indicator light) is turned on to indicate the fault. It is then possible to use a code scanner to retrieve the code from the computer, so you can know what the computer has detected. Once the computer senses that the oxygen sensor has been replaced, it will turn off the MIL.
Note: the oxygen sensor was just an example, there may be many reasons that the computer will turn the MIL on, and you need to use the scanner to read the code.
There are a few intermittent codes that can be cleared, and to do that you'll need a little better code scanner. The better models give the option to clear the code, but if the problem still exists, the code will come right back on as soon as the computer detects the fault.
