That's an incredibly delicate situation as each person grieves differently. Some appreciate the shoulder to cry on while others wish to be left alone to mourn. One of the typical traditions is to bake them a casserole or some other dish and schedule a visit. Often times during mourning we don't feel like eating or when we do we don't feel like cooking. Having a meal already prepared for them is almost always a welcome gesture. Drop by with the casserole, offer your condolences and let them know you're willing to help if it's needed.
