Those icons are: calendar, photos, camera, YouTube, clock, maps, notes, stocks, calculator, settings, weather, safari, mail, app store, phone, messages, iPod, contacts, iTunes, (voice memos on OS 3.0). I do not have the iPhone 3Gs so if there are more I don't know them.
What does it mean if a person send a message with squares?
It was probably someone with an iPhone and used the little characters/icons in the text. Only people who have iPhones can see them or they will just look like squares if sent to non iPhone users. :)
