First, make sure you have an internet connection. Turn on your PS3 and go to Settings>Network Settings>Internet Connection Settings. Choose Easy, then choose what kind on connections you are using. Wired means there is a physical wire going from your modem or router directly to your PS3. Wireless means you have a wireless router and you are connecting without a wire. When using a wireless router, be sure to choose your router's name and press X. Then, if you have one, enter your network's passkey. If not, select "None" on the screen that asks you for your connection's security. Then press X to confirm and again to test your connection. The next screen will show you the progress of the connection test. Everything should check out, and the NAT type should be 1 or 2. If it is 3, that means something is wrong with your connection.

NAT Type 1 means that you are connected directly to the internet, which is most common in wired connections because there is no median in the connection. This will also produce the least amount of lag when playing online games.

NAT Type 2 means that your connection works, but there is a median. This is usually only in wireless connections because the system has to go through a router before it can get online.

NAT Type 3 means there is a problem with the connection and that you will have difficulties in your connection, whether it is in the store, downloading software and updates, or playing online. If your NAT Type is 3, contact your internet service provider and ask if their service is recommended for online gaming

That means don't think about dial-up, cell phone or USB port online connection because they will not work.The ethernet cable goes to your router or modem, not your computer.

Once your PS3 is connected to your television and you already have WiFi you go to the settings menu and then the internet connection. For many people that already have a home internet system you will need to purchase a wired router and ethernet cable or a wireless router. If you have dial up you will not be able to connect the PS3 to dial up. If you use a USB port system to connect to the internet you will not be able to connect the PS3 to it. The PS3 must be connected with WiFi or ethernet cable. The ethernet or wired connection provides the best signal and I use it even though I have a wireless router.
