1] Acetylene combines directly with water in the presence of Mercury(II) salts to give ethanal [acetaldehyde as you are still using old names]
CH.CH + H2O ---- Hg2+ catalyst ---> CH3CHO
2] This is readily oxidised to ethanoic acid [acetic acid] using acid dichromate
CH3HO + 'O' -------> CH3OOH
3] Neutralise with NaOH and evaporate to dryness to heat gently to get anhydrous sodium acetate
CH3COOH + NaOH -----> CH3COONa + H2O
4] heat with soda lime to get methane
CH3COONa + NaOH ---> CH4 + Na2CO3

How can you prepare ethanol from acetylene?

Full combustion of methane yields only carbon dioxide and water. However, acetylene is one of the products of the partial oxidation (i.e. incomplete combustion) of methane. According to [1], "Acetylene may be produced from methane in any process which raises the methane to a high temperature for a very short period followed by rapid cooling. [....] The process was studied at temperatures of 1000°C to 1300°C and reaction times of .01 to .03 seconds." Source: [1] http://circle.ubc.ca/handle/2429/41033
