If you have a larger bike, as in a bike that is slightly large for you as an xc rider, it is probably not wise to do this conversion.

However, if you have a bike that is slightly on the smaller side for your size range, go for it!

Snappiness and quick handling are at the forefront of this conversion, this will help your maneuverability in tight spots. To do this you will likely need a shorter stem 45-60mm and a bar with between 1-2 inches of rise. In addition to the steering impact of this modification this will also keep you over the center of the bike, keeping you from going over the bars on a sketchy landing.

Next, is drivetrain modifications, here simpler is better. Since you will be enduring big hits, chain-line tightness is of the most importance. Explore chain tensioning options, if keeping gears a front mounted crank tensioner will be best. You will also want to go with a single ring in the front, a 34-36t. This will also likely require a guide to keep your chain form dropping, there are many guide and tensioner combos available.

The final item of importance is tires. This is entirely dependent on the conditions of your regular jumps. If loose/wet go with knobs, if hard packed go with smooth low profile. Here typical rule of thumb is go wider, it will give you more balance and stability on takeoff and landing.

After making these easy modifications, just lower your saddle and have fun!

Hope this was helpful.
