Many people are sensitive about eating animals that they consider as pets or "special" although many of these (seals horses, rabbits, dogs, potbellied pigs, etc.) are consumed in other parts of the world. Guinea pigs were originally domesticated for their meat in the Andes. They continue to be a significant part of the diet in Peru and Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia. Expatriates from these countries continue to eat them, and some fancier restaurants in the USA prepare these recipes. The meat is described as being similar to rabbit or the dark meat of chicken.

Typical cooling methods include frying, broiling, roasting, or being incorporated into a casserole or a fricassee. There is no reason to suspect that the meat could not be substituted for rabbit in any rabbit stew recipe.
