One way of creating a backup copy of your favorite DVD movies is to save it into your hard drive. I would recommend the 2nd option because by ripping the DVD you can save a lot of hard disk space. If you are copying a DVD5 (single layer DVD) movie into your hard drive, by doing option 1 you will need at least 4.7GB of free hard disk space or 9GB for DVD9 (dual layer DVD) unlike ripping the DVD where you will only need more or less 700mb for DVD5 and around 2GB for DVD9. There is really a big difference in terms of file size unless you have a very huge capacity hard disk available. Another advantage also of ripping the DVD is that you can choose what file format you like for your encoded movie file such as .avi, mp4, .wmv, .asf, .flv etc. so you can play and watch them easily using your DVD player software.
