Vacuum leaks can happen in a few different ways:

  • Noisy ones - that could be a vacuum hose that has come loose or broken and hiss like a ticked-off snake. Listen real close to the engine to find the source
  • Sneaky ones - this could be something like the infamous problem with the 1999-2003 Windstars having defective "isolator bolts" on the lower intake manifold.

    You won't hear it, but this problem lets air sneak into the engine and cause the Check Engine Light to come on, with trouble codes 171 and 174 - lean condition, banks 1 and 2.
