Best Answer
  1. Choose a Gothic setting eg. Victorian or Edwardian time period, dark-age, medieval, or pre-modern architecture, night-time scenes, dark caverns, swamps, marshes.
  2. Torrid emotions; passion, lust, despair, anguish, threat, fear, terror.
  3. Loss of control, seduction, allurement, corruption, abandonment of virtues and ideals.
  4. The resistance and defeat of evil, preferably by the adoption of such and yet but its ultimate denial as well.
  5. Vampires or Vampyres or The thralls of such or Dhampirs or ghouls or some kind of mystic or near mystic creature.
  6. Such questionable authority. Someone who seems to know what is going on but is distrusted and not comfortably allied with.

No single one of these is essential. Writers are given the freedom (encouraged even) to 'push the envelope' to try out new and interesting twists to 'breath new life into old themes'. eg.

  • Modern times and a vampire who feeds off of and kills only criminals. 'Innocent Blood'
  • Near modern times; hospital, retirement home, battlefield settings. A vampire who feeds and kills only for euthanasia. 'Hush, my sweet.'
  • Modern times, urban setting. A vampire who doesn't kill but recruits a community of compliant thralls. 'District of NewCastle'
  • A troop of vampires kept and maintained by the army as a special operations squad. 'A.W.O.L, We will send you straight to Hell'
