How do you deal with a six year old stepson?

1) Love him 2) Find something to have in common (pre-existing or no) 3) Talk with him and make a special reoccuring time for that (dinner is good) 4) Love him (yes I repeated it on purpose) 5) If he acts out, know its not really about you, don't take it personally 6) If he acts out, tell him you will have to talk about the behavior with your spouse and you will have to decide together what to do about it. 7) If punishment is warranted, let your spouse take the lead (especially since they are the birthing parent). If they want you to take the lead, then begin light and add more severe punishments as you go. Working is often a good way to work out young energies, such as washing the cabinets carefully or dusting. 8) Learn all there is to know about the "enemy." 9) Remember what it was like to be young. It helps to recall you were not always so old. My mother says, "7 is the age of reason." Talking and discussing will help. Perhaps not today, but it will help.
