Depends on whether "too much time" is refering to the male viewpoint or the female one. For men, "too much time" with friends is usually regarded as staying out till the wee hours of the morning. For women, "too much time" is being late home for dinner.
The truth is in the middle. He needs time with friends, but he needs to spend time with you. If he is to be late, he should call. And the call should be him on the way, not him letting you know he's still at Frank's trying to reach level six on some video game, or watch the last inning of Baseball.
The two of you need to sit down and define your needs. He should not "need" to be gone every evening - and you should not "need" him home every evening.
Balance.
(And by all means, find some friends to hang out with while he's having his "boy's nights".)
