scanner---often abbreviated to just scanner---is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image. Common examples found in offices are variations of the desktop (or flatbed) scanner where the document is placed on a glass window for scanning. Hand-held scanners, where the device is moved by hand, have evolved from text scanning "wands" to 3D scanners used for industrial design, reverse engineering, test and measurement, orthotics, gaming and other applications. Mechanically driven scanners that move the document are typically used for large-format documents, where a flatbed design would be impractical.

A scanner reads data printed or handwritten on documents and photos, and then transfer it to the computer connected to it.it is a device that scans documents and converts them into digital data.
A scanner scans images and/or text documents on paper that is not on the computer, and makes a virtual copy onto a computer that can then be edited, opposed to a printer that prints a document from a computer.

A Scanner 'reads' paper documents and turn them into electronic files, usually saved as images. it can also in text and then optical character recognition (OCR) software recognises the letter and turn the text into a word-processed documents. Scanner is a machine to convert manual data to binary. For example to convert a book to computer format as PDG files or word files or converting pictures into the jpg format or whatever.
