Washing instructions are usually on the label attached to a garment. Otherwise, if there is no label, you need to identify the material: woollen garments need a different treatment than a cotton garment. A man's suit will need dry-cleaning. Also, the risk of colours running: a red cardigan turning a white shirt pink! Usually colours are washed separately to whites.

If the embroidery is firm and colorfast, they can be laundered just like other delicate item. If not, it is best to have them cleaned professionally.
