The technical definition is "Electrical resistance is a ratio of the degree to which an object opposes an electric current through it, measured in ohms." In simplfied terms, electrical resistance is broadly equivalent to friction in a mechanical system. If you applied a voltage to a circuit with zero resistance then you would get an infinite current. In reality all circuits have some resistance which limits the current. We can predict the current in a given circuit using Ohms law: V = I x R Where: V is Voltage (measured in Volts) I is current (measured in Amps) R is resistance (measured in Ohms)

Resistance of circuit is opposition offered to flow of current by that circuit.

Causes:

1. it opposes the flow of current

2. it ipposes the voltage

3. it protect the electrical component.

4. it protect from any electrical hazards

Not really, resistance is mostly centralised to one area of the circuit where the lower the resistance the lower the voltage but higher the amps. Resistance can be caused by many things such as a larger piece of wire in place of a thinner piece, or a broken wire replaced by a connector. These increase the resistance because there are things in the way of the current.

It doesn't necessarily have any purpose. It is a natural feature of any circuit, and caused by the length, cross-sectional area, and resistivity of the conducting material. In other words, it exists, whether we want it or not! Ideally, it would be a good thing if resistance didn't exist in supply cables, as it causes a voltage drop along the cable, and is responsible for energy losses.

'Resistors', on the other hand, are circuit components having specific values of resistance, which can be added to a circuit in order to modify the natural resistance of that circuit.

  1. If total voltage and current are known then, Rt = Vt/It will figure total resistance.
  2. If total power and total voltage are known then Rt = Vt2/Pt will figure total resistance.
  3. If total power and total current are known then Rt = Pt/It2 will figure total resistance.
  4. If the total current or voltage and power of all the components in the circuit are known then add all the power values to get Pt, and then you can use either Rt = Vt2/Pt or Rt = Pt/It2 to figure total resistance.
