If you're referring solely to US Coins, it requires a knowledge of mint mark letters and their positions. If you have a specific coin or coins in mind, one good site is linked below. It shows the positions and letters for every circulating US coin ever minted.

Unfortunately there's no general answer that applies to all coins because positions vary by date and denomination. Since 1968 the position has been pretty much standardized near the date, and since 1980 ('79 for dollars) all Philadelphia coins except cents have a P mint mark.

Before those years it was pretty much a free-for-all. Up till 1968 most but not all US coins had mint marks on the reverse side but the position could be anywhere within the design - under the eagle on some higher-denomination coins, near the edge on others, or in some other place depending on what might fit conveniently within the design. To make things even more confusing, nearly all coins minted in Philadelphia up till 1980 didn't have any mint marks at all!

How much is the Eisenhower uncirculated silver dollar?

Eisenhower Dollars were minted from 1971 through 1978 at the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco mints. The mint mark is located on the Obverse [heads] side of the coin at the base of Eisenhower's neck and above the date. A letter "D" indicates the coin was minted at the Denver mint. An "S" indicates the coin was minted at the San Francisco mint. If there is no letter, that indicates the coin was minted at Philadelphia. Please examine your coin to determine the date it was minted and the mint where it was struck. When you have this information, post a new question concerning it and an estimated value can be given.

To determine where a coin was minted it is necessary to locate the mint mark. This mark is a small letter or letters located somewhere on the coin. For the Morgan Dollar, this mark is located on the reverse [tails] side of the coin just above the letters "DO" in the word "DOLLAR". For the Carson City mint the mark is a "CC". {quotes are mine}

What is the value of an 1849 California gold coin?

There were many privately-produced gold coins minted when the Gold Rush started, and there are far more modern replicas. Without specific information about the coin it's not possible to determine what you have. It may be necessary to have the coin inspected in person to determine whether it's real or a copy.
