It's an integral part of the PCM (computer) that controls most aspects of the cars electronics. whoever gave the first answer is an idiot. all the VATS (vehicle antitheft system) does is verify the key and tell the computer ECC that its ok to let the car start. its a plastic box with 8 wires coming out of it, there is room for 16 wires tho. it is located under the dash, like by the bottom of the steering wheel.
