Here's what the Haynes manual says;
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. (bear in mind that if you have a Delco Loc II, or Theftlock audio system, make sure that you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery)
Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Place the ignition switch key in the LOCK position and remove the key.
Remove the airbag fuse from the fuse block.
I highly recommend that you disable the airbag system only for service procedures! Driving without your airbags being activated is a really bad idea. If, God forbid, something should happen, you won't have the protection of the airbag. Also, there could be insurance ramifications if it's found that you were driving with airbags disabled.
