To disassemble a standard M1911A1 (no full-length guide rod), first press the magazine release and drop the magazine. Then pull the slide all the way back to ensure that the chamber is empty. Allow the slide to return to battery. Push down on the recoil spring plug and turn the barrel bushing to the side and remove the recoil spring. Push the slide back until the takedown notch is in line with the back of the slide release. Push the slide release out from the right side of the pistol. Now push the slide forward until it comes off of the frame. Now rotate the barrel bushing until it comes out of the slide. Push the barrel forward until it comes out of the slide. Your 1911 is now field stripped. To reassemble it, reverse these steps.

if they were war time mfg'd it was common practice to disassemble guns in the field and dump them all in a pot of boiling water to clean them. the parts were then put together with dis-regard to matching slide with frame. this held true when I was in Korea in 1951. now you can see how a USS slide is found on a Ithaca frame......
