Dont' know for sure about a Ford but in a GM I just touched the emergency brake pedal. make it click once. On the GM it wasn't enough to actually engage the brake but the DRL's shut off.
that is not really a good idea, the daytime running lights on modern vehicles is for safety, and is part of your insurance. if your car has them, it is best to leave them the way they are.

The 98 did not come with daytime running lights. It did in Canada and the module is under the left front fender beside the light.
On a 1998, you can kill the running lights by pulling the the 15 daylight running light fuse in the engine comparement fuse box. Manual says to disconnect the battery before openning this comparment.
