Have the patient open their hand and place the padded part of the bandage on it with a small amount hanging over. Then, ask them to close their fist and stick their thumb out (this is so you can check their circulation later). Then wrap the bandage around their closed fist in a figure-of-eight. Then tie the ends together. You should then regularly press on the nail of the sticking out thumb. The nail-bed will go white, and then return to the usual pink. This should take 1 second. This method of checking circulation is called capillary refill.
