The keys to humor I have found are the correct uses of Irony, uniqueness, timing and the understanding of your surroundings. For example, irony makes people think irregularly and it skews with what should actually happen. Its funny because a human would never sniff a dogs butt although a dog would do just the opposite. Uniqueness is what makes your 'funny' worth listening to. Something is funny the first time, but it loses its flavor after the eighteenth time. Timing allows for a joke to be enjoyed, it also gives you a window in which a specific comment could be called funny. Missing the fulcrum of a situations humoristic qualities can cost you a joke. Understanding your surroundings is probably one of the more important ones. Say for example you tell a child about your experience with a date that went horribly- so much that its definitely something to laugh about. Most of what you say with go: neeeeerrrrrrrrr, right over their heads. Also, if you don't know when something is funny or exactly how something is funny then your execution will suffer tremendously.
