You first need to be running in a left or right direction. Once you get some speed, jump in the direction that you are running in and keep the run button held down while you are in mid-air. As you start spinning toward the ground, quickly press the "down" button twice to morph into a ball just before you hit the ground and continue to press the directional pad button in the direction that you are going. This move is all about timing and takes some practice to pull off. If you are able to do it correctly, Samus should turn into a ball and continue speeding in the direction that you were previously running in.

Try this technique in Brinstar to cross the collapsible bridge beyond the first red door on the right and get the early super missiles. This move is also handy for getting the ice beam early by running through the first green door on the left in Norfair and mock balling underneath the falling metal barriers.
