If you are playing minecraft on the computer, when creating a new world, clicking the "More World Options..." button will bring you to another section of the new world menu where you are able to enable the bonus chest, generate the world with a seed, turn on cheats, and enable generated structures (Dungeons, mineshafts, villages, etc.).
You should see the "World Type" button next to the "Generated Structures" button, and by default, it will be set to Default (normal world). Clicking it once will make the world a Superflat world, and clicking it again will change it to the Large Biomes world type.
Note that if you are on Minecraft: Pocket Edition, or Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, you are not able to change world types, because Default worlds are the only available world types currently.
