minecraft worlds are generated by "seeds". Basically, when you begin your game, you can actually type in any word or random collection of numbers and letters to generate a unique level. You can then share that code with your friends so they can play the same level by themselves.
For instance, begin a new game and in the field on the new game menu that reads "seed", enter the word "offworld" -- without the quotes. It will spawn you a desolate snow covered world. Theoretically, you can put anything in this field to generate a unique level.
Remember, seeds are case sensitive and space sensitive. That means that "chinatown", "Chinatown", "ChinaTown", and "China Town" will give you four completely different levels. So make sure when you share them with friends that you are very specific about what is capitalized and what and where spaces appear.
