You can go to the Task Manager and end the process, however I do not recommend this as Microsoft Office might not have been installed properly, leading to problems with using the program. If you really need to end it, go ahead and do it that way. But to be safe, you can re-install Microsoft Office and everything should be fixed.
It brings you to the end of the file you are working on like your Word document, Excel worksheet or Powerpoint presentation.
The two main differences are:- MS Office has to be paid for - OpenOffice is free to download, and... MS Office is a copyright program - OpenOffice is 'open source' This means that Microsoft will NOT licence the end user (you and me) to make changes to their program. Open source means OpenOffice is capable of being edited by the end user to suit their needs.

First make sure that the document is saved. To do this you go to the upper left end of the screen and press save or save as. Then after your work is saved you go to the upper right end of the screen and press the red X box. You can press Alt - F4 to exit it too.
At the end of the session, we all exited out of the lunch room and went out to recess.
As far as I am aware there is no difference in the actual suite of programs included in each package. The academic license though is supposed to be used for personal and academic use only as far as the E.U.L.A. ( End User License Agreement ) is concerned and NOT in a business or professional environment such as in an office environment.
