This proverb is symbolized by three monkeys, one with his hands over his eyes, another with his hands over his ears and the last with his hands over his mouth.

Different cultures interpret the meaning differently. In the Western world it symbolizes those who do nothing when evil things are being done by others. People who "look the other way" to avoid getting involved when evil is being done. Like the German people when the Nazis were persecuting the Jews.

As Bishop Desmond Tutu says, neutrality favors to the oppressor.
