I may go about it slightly differently if the child wasn't Muslim, but I think it is pretty much the same. My son has always seen mommy wear the scarf so it is pretty common place in my home.... I basically told them that women in Islam cover their hair to keep it a secret. That God made us all have different hair.. some long, some short, some red, some brown. So, as a gift to our husbands and our children and family... we save it only for them to see. As they get older and I thought they better understood our faith then I explained that God wants us to be judged for who we are and not what we look like. As women in this society we are judged by our beauty and that God wanted us to be treated fairly so he asked of us to cover our hair and bodies so that we can only be judged for our brains and actions. My son was able to understand this at a fairly young age, maybe around 6 or 7, but not all kids can. Hope this helps!
