Inhumane Death:

Denying am orphaned calf colostrum, milk or not hydrating it when it gets scours is a sure way to kill a calf. Other ways include running it over with a truck, quad or tractor; "accidentally" (whether it is or not) dropping a bale or bale feeder on top of it; allowing it to freeze to death out in the middle of winter; allowing it to succumb to heat exhaustion if born on a hot summer's day; not vaccinating for Blackleg if you have history of bacteria causing Blackleg in your soil; Denying it treatment if it gets Navel Ill or if it gets infested by hoards of flies if you allow the cows to calve during fly season; allowing predators like vultures, wolves, bears, coyotes, cougars and bobcats to flourish in your area and kill and eat the calves that are born; Not helping a birthing momma cow in time and killing both cow and calf if calf is left inside the cow too long; allowing cows to calve in a cold, wet environment; starving the cows prior to calving; denying the cows adequate nutrients (i.e. Selenium), resulting in calves dying from a disorder like White Muscle Disease as soon as they are born; allowing cows to consume poisonous plants which will make them abort their premie calves (killing the calves in the process); allowing in-breeding which rersults in calves born with lethal genes (Crooked Calf, Bulldog calf, Inside-out calf, etc.); denying a calf treatment if it gets a broken leg; allowing the cowherd to trample it to death as soon as it is born (this has in fact happened to one person before); and the list goes on.

Humane Death:

In a slaughter house, calves are killed with a bolt-gun to the head which stuns them and allows the butcher to hoist them up by their backlegs and cut their throats. If they are beyond treatment, a bullet between the eyes is one humane quick way to put a calf down, or a lethal injection administered by a veterinarian.
