Unfortunately the term has been co-opted and misused by the 'politically correct' crowd. If profiling (of ANY type) - be it age, gender, ethnicity, or race - can be used in order to apprehend criminals then it is a necessary tool of law enforcement.

For a very real present-day illustration of the nonsensical lengths to which the non-use of profiling has driven us, is the screening of grandmothers and babies at airports in order to justify the occasional search of REAL possible evil-doers.
