To field strip the Heckler & Koch USP Compact 40, first actuate the magazine release paddle and remove the magazine. Pull the slide completely to the rear to ensure that there are no rounds in the chamber. Allow the slide to return to battery. Using your dominant hand, pull back the slide until the takedown notch is aligned with the axle of the magazine release; at this point, use your non-dominant hand to push the magazine release out of the pistol from the left side of the frame. Pull the magazine release out all the way and set it to the side. Now release the slide and push it forward and off the frame. Set the frame to the side. Turn the slide upside down and push the recoil spring guide from the rear and pull it out of the slide; this will expose the underside of the barrel. Grab the barrel by the feed ramp and pull it up and out of the slide. Your basic field strip is now complete. To reassemble your USP, reverse these steps.
