The numbers stamped in front of the head are the engine id numbers.
if they are the no.'s on a pad in front of the left head, they are the engine no.
there should be a numbered stamped on the rear of the engine
On a small flat pad protruding forward from the engine block just below the front of the passenger side cylinder head.
The block casting numbers are on the top driver side of the bellhousing flange at the back of the engine. The engine code is stamped into a pad on the block deck in front of the passenger side cylinder head.
drivers side under the hood for the body/frame for all chevys of that age, and the engine vin is stamped into the block
The number is stamped on the back of the engine behind the driver side head on a flat deck were the transmission bolts up to the engine. You can see the "casting number" with an inspection mirror. On some later model engines the last 3 numbers are stamped between the freeze plugs on the side of the engine.
Facing the engine and to the right of center just below the intake manifold you will see a flat area about 1/2 inch wide and 2 inches wide. The numbers will be stamped on that area.

Serial number, and or engine or vehicle code are stamped on the cylinder deck on the right front of the block immediately in front of the right cylinder head. Casting numbers and date codes are on the right rear of the block just in front of the bell housing mounting surface.
