If it's like my 1995 , just open your rear liftgate and just above the left rear taillamp there is a rubber plug/cap that you remove to add fluid while watching the windshield washer tank level in the jack compartment. (Helpfull)

behind the driver side kickpanel.

It is probably comming from the windshield. Have someone run water on the windshield and check it inside with a flashlight.

On the windshield frame, right in front of the driver, behind the dash pad. The motor mounts to the inside wall of the windshield frame and drives the linkage that is inside the frame.
The daytime running light module on a 1996 Ford Explorer can be found behind the bumper. It is on the driver's side of the car.
The temp sensor is located behind the bumper, below and to the left of the driver's side headlight.
Under the driver's side front corner of the car, behind the bumper.
more than likely the windshield is leaking and the water is running behind the dash onto the floor.
