I would think the question would be how do you find the parts for a sixty year old furnace.

You are right, but that got me nowhere. So I am looking for someone who knows the answer to that question!

How can I tell if my furnace is working at its best?

Given the major expense of a home's heating system, it's a good idea to have your HVAC expert come out late in the summer/early fall to do an inspection and annual maintenance on the furnace. Most companies run specials that time of year, which helps them avoid emergency calls in January about furnaces that have suddenly stop working. Once you get a "clean bill of health" for your furnace, keep a stack of filters nearby and change the filter every 30 days. This will keep clean air flowing more easily and not cause undue stress on the furnace.

How often should you get your heating and air conditioning system checked?

Technicians will tell you once per year. I say, when you have a problem. They'll just charge you an arm and a leg to vacuum it out. Just remember to replace the filter a couple times a year and keep the furnace clean from dust and you shouldn't have too many problems. Change your filter at least once a month and more often if you have pets or smoke. Only the maid will vacuum out your furnace. A HVAC tech cleans the furnace, checks and services about 20 things in your furnace. The biggest thing a tech will look for is a CO leak. Metal splits with heat and CO leaks and usually you and your family die in your sleep. Peace of mind and keeping you and your family safe costs less than a $100 a year. It's when you have a problem that's it could be too late. Ask an undertaker when to have your furnace checked.
