It is Likely a vacuum leak under dash leading to vents

It can be many things. A defective O2 sensor, a vacuum leak, defective catalytic converter just to name a few. Look for a vacuum leak, especially at the PCV hose.
If you smell gas fumes you have a leak. To fix it you must find the leak. Your nose is your best tool to find the leak. This can be very dangerous so I would find and fix the leak ASAP.
Perhaps a vacuum leak. Check vacuum lines and also around the intake manifold
check for vacuum leak, if none, your car isn't getting enough fuel
The PVC valve on a 98 Eclipse is located on to or the valve cover. It is connected to the intake with a hose.
I don't think so. The automatic transmission is controlled by engine speed, vehicle speed and throttle position. A large vacuum leak could effect throttle position, but it would cause other problems more noticable than the effect on transmission shifting. a vacuum leak mpuld not cause trasmission to slip but a band inside transmission would cause the problem
Spark plugs, dirty air filter, deposits in combustion chambers, dirty egr, vacuum leak and so on.
It's possible but it's not easy to find another one.
The canister purge valve on a 98 Eclipse is located on the front of the car. It is on the right corner of the bumper.
