Typically Facebook spam will appear from someone in your Friends list that you interact with the least. It will look like they are commenting or messaging you and will commonly include popular phrases like "LOL" and "Wassup?!" to make it seem like it is actually is coming from that person. Then, most of the time there will be a link attached.

There are a few important things to check when deciding if an email is spam. If it is a personal response to you asking for information or buying something from a company, it is not spam. If you do not remember asking for any information, check and see if it has the company's address and a disclaimer that it is a solicitation and an option to unsubscribe. Without these things, a mass email with information about a service or product is spam.

Why does paying for email not stop spam?

Typically, the people you pay for your email are not the ones sending you the spam. Spammers are 3rd party entities who send spam to any email address they can find. ISPs and web providers can do little to stop spam, even for their premium customers. Sure, they can add a spam folder and some algorithms to move suspected spam emails there, but they cannot completely stop the spam.

Your email should provide you with a spam filter already. It is easy to indicate which email is spam to the email provider which will flag the spam sender.
